Banning Ranch, one of Southern California's last large swaths of coastal open space, sits above Pacific Coast Highway in north Newport Beach, Calif., Monday, Dec. 19, 2022. A coastal land deal to preserve 387 acres as natural open space for the public has closed escrow, a nearly $100 million sale that took 30 years to turn into a reality and is a momentous win for environmental activists who fought off plans for development. It is being renamed the Frank and Joan Randall Preserve, in honor of the Orange County philanthropists who donated $50 million toward the former oil field's purchase.
