The crisis at OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, deepened on Monday morning after the board appointed Emmett Shear as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). His appointment came after a busy weekend, where employees and investors rallied behind Sam Altman, the de-facto leader of generative AI.
Leading OpenAI investors like Thrive Capital, Microsoft, and Khosla Ventures were putting pressure on the board to reinstate Altman. Therefore, the decision to appoint Emmet Shear is a rebuke to the company’s biggest backers.
Emmett Shear is a well-known Silicon Valley executive who served as the CEO of Twitch for years. As the Chief Executive, he engineered the company’s rise to become a leading player in gaming streaming. It was acquired by Amazon in 2014 in a $970 million deal and has over 8 million streamers every month.
He resigned as the CEO of Twitch earlier this year to focus on private projects. His LinkedIn page has not indicated any career moves after leaving Twitch.
Emmett faces a challenging period at OpenAI. For one, his incoming will likely see more staffers quit and join Sam Altman’s new ventures. Before his firing, he was said to be about to launch an AI-focused semiconductor company that would compete with Nvidia.
His external initiatives, including his ownership of Oklo, explains why OpenAI board members decided to fire him. Their argument was that he was using OpenAI’s popularity to raise money for his external projects.
It is unclear what will happen next because of the disagreements between key players, including Microsoft, which has committed over $10 billion in funding. Also, it is not clear whether Thrive Capital will agree to buy back some of employees shares in the company.OpenAI is facing numerous challenges. It is seeing strong competition from the likes of Anthropic, Alphabet, and Elon Musk’s Grok. There are also concerns about the company’s future growth.
