AstraZeneca Suspends COVID-19 Vaccine Trial on Safety Concern | UK Market Update

UK based pharma major, AstraZeneca Plc (LON:AZN), which is developing COVID-19 vaccine with the University of Oxford stated that it had paused late-stage trial of the COVID-19 vaccine candidate. The trial was put on hold after a volunteer developed some unexplained illness. AstraZeneca/Oxford COVID-19 vaccine AZD1222 is under late-stages of clinical trials. The Company stated it voluntarily paused vaccination for review of safety information by an independent committee. The interruption of the clinical trial has impacted other vaccine trials of AstraZeneca and ongoing trials by other vaccine developers.

The shares of Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) noted a plunge of 21.06% on 08 September 2020 from its previous day close. The surprise non-inclusion of Tesla in the S&P 500 index led to the fall. On 8 September 2020, Tesla shares closed the day’s trade at US$330.21, after hitting a low of US$330.01 intra-day. Tesla’s market capitalization now stands at ~US$307.69 billion. Tesla, with Elon Musk as chief executive, has been one of the biggest winners of recent stock market rallies as investors have piled into tech firms during the pandemic.

Uber has said that all taxis available through its app will be electric by 2040 - and by 2030 in US, Canadian and European cities. Uber said the move was part of its "responsibility" to tackle the challenge of climate change. The ride hailing business said that it would spend £614m to help drivers switch to electric cars, creating partnerships with manufacturers to ensure discounts. Users will also be able to request an electric or hybrid vehicle. The provision is accessible in 15 US and Canadian cities for an added $1. Uber said it would launch in more than 65 cities globally by the end of the year.
