Highlights:

  • Payment Suspension: UK government pauses payments on Solid State's defence contract pending a strategic review.
  • Financial Impact: Expected orders deferred beyond the current fiscal year, affecting short-term revenue.
  • Market Reaction: Shares drop 40% to 135.33p following the announcement.

AIM-listed electronics firm Solid State PLC (LSE:SOLI) experienced a significant 40% decline in share value on Friday after announcing a suspension of payments related to a UK government defence contract. The suspension is in place pending the completion of a strategic defence review scheduled for next summer.

The company anticipates that the deferred orders will be fulfilled in due course; however, they will not contribute to the current financial period's revenue. Chief Executive Gary Marsh expressed frustration over the delays but maintained an optimistic outlook for medium- and long-term defence spending, citing the current geopolitical climate.

"Aside from this order deferral, the open order book continues to improve across our target markets," Marsh added.

Following the announcement, Solid State's shares were trading at 135.33p.

The UK government's strategic defence review, initiated in July 2024, aims to reassess defence priorities and spending in response to evolving global threats. The review is expected to conclude in the first half of 2025, potentially impacting defence contracts and associated payments during this period.

Solid State PLC specializes in supplying value-added components and manufacturing computing, power, and communications products. The company has a history of securing contracts within the defence sector, making the current payment suspension a notable development for stakeholders.

Investors and market analysts will be closely monitoring the outcomes of the strategic defence review and its implications for Solid State's future contracts and financial performance. The company's ability to navigate these challenges will be crucial in maintaining its position within the defence industry.
