Aptamer Group plc (AIM: APTA), a leader in developing novel Optimer® binders for applications in the life sciences industry, has provided an update on its collaboration with Unilever to introduce Optimer binders for cosmetic applications.

Partnership Overview and Milestones

Initiated in 2022, the partnership between Aptamer Group and Unilever aims to leverage Optimer binders to address malodour in personal care products. Following successful development, the Optimer binders underwent rigorous testing at both Aptamer Group and Unilever, demonstrating highly positive and reproducible results. These promising outcomes highlight the binders' potential for integration into downstream cosmetic products.

In recognition of the innovative strides made, Aptamer Group submitted a patent on 28 March 2024 to safeguard the developed Optimer binders. This move not only protects Aptamer Group's intellectual property but also secures precedence in advancing the technology for commercial applications.

Testing of the Optimer binders continues in Unilever's laboratories, with plans for on-person functionality studies scheduled for the second half of 2024. This phase aims to further validate the effectiveness and suitability of the binders in real-world scenarios, a critical step towards eventual market readiness.

The global deodorant market, valued at $25.6 billion in 2023, underscores the significant opportunity for innovative solutions such as Aptamer's Optimer binders. Unilever, as a prominent player in the personal care industry, stands to benefit greatly from integrating advanced technologies that enhance product performance and consumer satisfaction.

Anticipated to conclude within the next two years, the ongoing project holds the potential for Aptamer Group to license the Optimer binders to Unilever upon successful completion. Dr. Arron Tolley, Chief Technical Officer of Aptamer Group, expressed optimism about the project's progression and the transformative impact Optimer binders could have on fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) like personal care products.
