Aptamer Group plc (AIM: APTA), renowned for developing innovative Optimer® binders that drive advancements in the life sciences, has announced a strategic partnership with Microsaic Systems plc (Microsaic). This collaboration aims to integrate a panel of Optimer binders into Microsaic’s newly acquired Microtox® water testing system.

Successful Integration and Superior Performance

Microsaic's recent acquisition of the Microtox® water testing system follows earlier successful integration of Aptamer's COVID-19 Optimer binders. These binders demonstrated superior detection capabilities when incorporated into the pathogen detection system, outperforming other affinity ligands such as Affimers. Trials conducted within the UK wastewater system showcased the effectiveness of Optimer-enabled pathogen detectors for COVID-19, highlighting the potential for further applications.

Advancing Waterborne Pathogen Detection

Following the acquisition of Microtox®, Microsaic plans to enhance the device for commercial use by developing a panel of Optimer binders specifically targeting key waterborne pathogens. Aptamer Group has reached Heads of Terms with Microsaic to develop these binders, which will target pathogens including E. coli, Cholera, Cryptosporidium, Legionella, and Norovirus. Once developed, these binders will be integrated into water pathogen detectors, enabling rapid and sensitive detection of multiple serious public health threats.

Real-Time Detection for Improved Public Health

The enhanced water testing system promises to revolutionize pathogen detection by providing continuous, real-time monitoring. This capability eliminates delays associated with traditional laboratory-based testing, allowing for immediate response to potential waterborne infections. The integration of Optimer binders into nationwide water systems will facilitate early detection and intervention, significantly improving public health safety.

Commitment to Innovation

Aptamer Group's collaboration with Microsaic underscores its commitment to innovation in the life sciences. By developing advanced Optimer binders for crucial applications such as water testing, Aptamer Group continues to expand the impact of its technology across various sectors. This partnership not only enhances water safety but also sets a precedent for future collaborations aimed at addressing global health challenges.

Future Prospects

With the successful development and integration of the Optimer binders, the collaboration between Aptamer Group and Microsaic Systems is poised to deliver a cutting-edge solution for waterborne pathogen detection. The enhanced Microtox® system will offer a robust tool for monitoring water quality, protecting public health, and ensuring timely responses to potential threats.
