The annual Nectar ‘Double Up’ promotion of the United Kingdom-based general retailer, J Sainsbury PLC (LON: SBRY) has started. Like previous years, the supermarket major is back with its scheme, which provides customers with the opportunity to exchange their Nectar points for vouchers worth twice. The primary idea behind the mainstream plan lies in offering the customers with assistance, particularly when the festival is round the corner.
Martin Lewis and U-turn of Sainsbury's stores
These vouchers cannot be used online and can only be redeemed at Sainsbury's stores. This means that the shoppers will need to move out of their houses to take advantage of the offer. Last week, Martin Lewis, the founder of Money Saving Expert, had urged Sainsbury to rethink on making alterations in its popular deal. He asked the retailer to reconsider its plan of working out of Double Up events during the lockdown period.
The fact that customers can only redeem their points in store will be difficult with the second lockdown being on. He said the changes were not fair on the part of its consumers. People desperately wait for using their Nectar points in the pre-Christmas period. Amid the lockdown, the supermarket is open only for redemption of the vouchers for a week.
It is inappropriate for the retail giant to force its customers to visit a store during the times of widespread deadly disease, risking their health. Sainsbury should have provided its customers with the convenience of using their vouchers from home via the web.
Lewis’s campaign made Sainsbury's make a U-turn, stating that those customers who are extremely clinically vulnerable who have already exchanged their points, can now swap them back if they can't go into the store during the promotion period. Not only this, but the customers will also be able to keep hold of the doubled points value to spend another time, rather than simply getting back what they put in.
Let us discuss the Nectar ‘Double Up’ promotion
The Scheme
If a customer is using the vouchers, it must be spent in one go. The minimum number of points that can be exchanged for a voucher is 1,000 and the maximum is 10,000, worth up to £100 under the scheme. The loyalty members of Sainsbury normally earn one Nectar point for every £1 spent at the store, which is worth 0.5 pence. The customers with less than 1,000 points automatically become ineligible and cannot take part in the scheme.
The below table gives an idea of how the points work:

Time Period
The points can be redeemed between 11 and 17 November 2020. The vouchers are subject to certain terms and conditions and can be used to spend on products from certain categories within the above-mentioned time frame.
Products Offered Under the Scheme
The promotional scheme of Sainsbury is valid across 11 of its departments including homeware, skincare, toys and Tu clothing. Seasonal products and gift items are also included in this list. The voucher can be used for other goods such as cosmetic products, electrical items, entertainment products and fragrance items. Alcoholic products such as Taste the Difference wine, champagne, sherry and port are also available for Double Up as confirmed by Sainsbury. However, online groceries and petrol are excluded from the list.
