Mosman Oil and Gas Ltd (LSE:MSMN) has announced a pivotal milestone in its helium exploration efforts, securing Tribal Council approval from the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe to lease 4,320 acres in Colorado's Four Corners region. This development marks a significant step in the company’s expansion into the lucrative helium exploration sector.
Approval Details and Project Scope
The agreement, which spans three years, allows Mosman to explore the Coyote Wash project area. The lease will be activated following a payment to the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, highlighting the company’s commitment to collaborative development in the region.
Chief executive Andy Carroll described the approval as a “major new exploration project” in a statement, emphasizing its strategic importance. “The Four Corners Area has been a major focus for Mosman, and, at the point this lease is subsequently granted, will complement our existing exploration project portfolio in south-eastern Colorado and Australia," Carroll said.
Regulatory and Environmental Compliance
Mosman is now in the process of finalizing a Program of Development (POD) for the Coyote Wash project. The program includes adherence to environmental and historical preservation requirements under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).
To streamline this process, Mosman has engaged an environmental consultancy to prepare the necessary documentation for submission to the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). The company anticipates completing these steps by January 2025, positioning the project for further development.
Strengthening Helium Exploration Portfolio
The Coyote Wash project is expected to enhance Mosman’s existing exploration portfolio, which includes assets in southeastern Colorado and Australia. The Four Corners region is known for its helium reserves, making it a key focus area for the company’s strategic expansion.
The approval aligns with Mosman’s broader ambitions to develop projects in regions with strong potential for helium production, a critical resource for various industrial and medical applications.
Future Outlook
With this key approval in place, Mosman is on track to solidify its presence in the helium exploration sector. The company’s focus on regulatory compliance and collaboration with local stakeholders underscores its commitment to sustainable and responsible development. As preparations continue, the Coyote Wash project is set to play a pivotal role in Mosman’s growth strategy in the coming years.
