Balfour Beatty (LSE:BBY), a leading international infrastructure group, has secured a £363 million contract from National Grid to undertake the Bramford to Twinstead Reinforcement project. This contract was awarded through National Grid's RIIO-2 framework and represents a significant step in enhancing the UK’s electricity network.
Project Scope and Objectives
The Bramford to Twinstead Reinforcement project is set to strengthen the electricity network across East Anglia, ensuring it can support the increasing demand for cleaner, greener electricity as the UK progresses towards its Net Zero targets. Balfour Beatty will replace the existing high voltage network between Bramford Substation in Suffolk and Twinstead Tee in Essex with a new 400-kilovolt overhead line extending 18 kilometers.
In addition to the overhead line, Balfour Beatty will also install 11 kilometers of underground cable through the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Stour Valley, areas renowned for their natural beauty and ecological significance.
Environmental and Community Commitments
Balfour Beatty is committed to working closely with ecologists and conservationists to minimize disruption to local wildlife during the construction process. The company has pledged to achieve a 10% biodiversity net gain over the project’s lifecycle, reflecting its dedication to environmental sustainability.
Construction Timeline and Employment
Main construction is scheduled to start in the first half of 2025, with project completion anticipated in 2028. At the peak of construction, Balfour Beatty plans to employ over 200 people, including 10 apprenticeship and graduate positions, supporting its commitment to The 5% Club.
