Arecor Therapeutics PLC (LSE:AREC) will present positive Phase I trial results for its ultra-concentrated, ultra-rapid-acting insulin, AT278, at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) 2024 conference in Madrid. The trial, which included overweight and obese individuals with Type 2 diabetes, demonstrated that AT278 significantly accelerates insulin absorption compared to NovoRapid, a commonly used rapid-acting insulin.
The data from this trial align with earlier results observed in individuals with Type 1 diabetes, reinforcing AT278’s ability to maintain a faster action profile across various diabetes types and body mass indices (BMIs). AT278’s high concentration (500 U/mL) addresses the needs of patients requiring large amounts of insulin daily, allowing for reduced injection volume without compromising efficacy.
Furthermore, AT278’s rapid absorption profile is a notable advancement for next-generation miniaturized insulin pumps. These pumps benefit from more concentrated insulins to decrease device size and extend wear time. The trial did not reveal any safety concerns, highlighting AT278’s favorable safety profile.
Professor Thomas Pieber, the principal investigator of the study, emphasized the clinical importance of these findings. The accelerated early pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) profile of AT278, observed in overweight and obese individuals with Type 2 diabetes, supports previous findings in Type 1 diabetes patients. This indicates that AT278 can offer improved post-prandial glucose control and enhanced convenience for those with high daily insulin requirements.
Additionally, AT278 has the potential to drive progress in developing miniaturized insulin pumps, addressing a significant challenge in current device design and usability. The development of such advanced insulin delivery systems could significantly benefit diabetes management by improving both glucose control and patient convenience.
