Poppy Gustafsson, the founder and former chief executive of the cybersecurity firm Darktrace, has been appointed as the United Kingdom's new investment minister. This significant appointment follows the recent acquisition of Darktrace by US private equity firm Thoma Bravo, further emphasizing the UK's potential as a leading destination for international business. In her new role, Gustafsson will also receive a peerage, granting her a seat in the House of Lords.

Expressing her enthusiasm for the position, Gustafsson noted the UK's advantageous business environment and her commitment to communicating this to the global business community. Her appointment comes at a pivotal moment, just ahead of a major summit in London where approximately 250 senior executives will gather to engage in discussions focused on fostering business growth and opportunities within the UK.

As investment minister, Gustafsson will lead the Office for Investment (OFI), which has been enhanced to better attract foreign businesses. The OFI, originally established in November 2020 under Boris Johnson's administration, will introduce new initiatives to streamline the process for foreign companies seeking to establish operations in the UK. Among these initiatives is a ‘concierge’ service designed to provide tailored support to foreign businesses throughout their establishment process.

The upcoming summit is expected to be a high-profile event, featuring keynote speeches from Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Leading financial institutions, including Lloyds Banking Group, {LSE:LLOY} Barclays, and NatWest, are among the sponsors of this event, which will also host executives from notable firms such as Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, and Citigroup. Gustafsson’s leadership role is anticipated to play a crucial part in enhancing the UK's position as an attractive locale for global business endeavors.
