The number of people gambling online at least once in a month and of age over 65 years has seen a substantial rise. Around 624,377 more gamblers were reported since the onset of the pandemic, according to the UK’s psychiatrist organisation, the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCP).

The rise came as the pandemic led to the closing of betting shops and limited options to do other activities while out and about.

As per the RCP, which analysed data by the UK’s Gambling Commission, the percentage of online gamblers, who were aged over 65, increased to 13.5 per cent in the year-to-September 2021.

This was a sharp increase from the pre-pandemic levels of 8.7 per cent in the year-to-September 2019.
