On Thursday, Verizon Communications (LSE:0Q1S) announced a major acquisition deal to acquire Frontier Communications, the leading pure-play fibre internet provider in the United States, for $20 billion in cash. Under the terms of the agreement, Verizon will offer $38.50 per share in cash, representing a premium of approximately 43.7% over Frontier’s 90-day volume-weighted average share price as of 3 September, the day before reports of the potential acquisition surfaced.
This acquisition is set to significantly enhance Verizon's fibre network across the country, accelerating its delivery of high-quality mobility and broadband services to both existing and new customers. The deal will also expand Verizon's intelligent edge network, which is crucial for advancing digital innovations such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things.
Hans Vestberg, Verizon’s chairman and chief executive, emphasized the importance of connectivity, stating, "Connectivity is essential in nearly every part of our lives and work, and no one delivers better than Verizon. Verizon offers more choice, flexibility, and value, and we continuously look for ways to provide the best product and network experience to our customers as we bolster our position as the provider of choice."
The acquisition will integrate Frontier’s extensive fibre network with Verizon's existing portfolio, which includes its renowned Fios offering. Frontier has dedicated substantial resources over the past four years to enhance and expand its fibre infrastructure, investing approximately $4.1 billion in these upgrades. Currently, over 50% of Frontier's revenue is derived from its fibre products.
This strategic move is expected to strengthen Verizon's position in the broadband and wireless markets, aligning with its broader goals of enhancing network capabilities and delivering superior services. The transaction is anticipated to bring together two significant players in the telecom industry, reinforcing Verizon’s competitive edge and broadening its service offerings.
