Faron Pharmaceuticals (LSE:FARN), a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, announced on Tuesday that its lead candidate, bexmarilimab, has received fast track designation from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This designation applies to bexmarilimab in combination with azacitidine for the treatment of relapsed or refractory myelodysplastic syndrome (r/r MDS).
The decision to grant fast track status follows encouraging outcomes from both phase one and ongoing phase two trials in Faron’s BEXMAB study. Fast track designation is a significant milestone, reserved for treatments targeting serious or life-threatening conditions that address unmet medical needs. This status allows for more frequent interactions with the FDA, enabling detailed discussions on the drug’s development plan and facilitating the gathering of necessary data for approval. Additionally, it opens the possibility for a rolling submission of a new drug application, potentially accelerating the review process.
The recognition of bexmarilimab highlights its potential to offer a new treatment option for patients with higher-risk MDS, particularly those who have relapsed or become resistant to standard hypomethylating agents (HMAs) such as azacitidine. Relapsed or refractory myelodysplastic syndrome is an aggressive form of blood cancer, with current treatment options often proving insufficient as many patients either relapse or fail to respond to HMAs.
Dr. Petri Bono, Chief Medical Officer at Faron, emphasized the significance of this development, noting that r/r MDS is a life-threatening condition with limited treatment options, creating a substantial unmet medical need. He highlighted that the trial results so far in HMA-failed MDS have demonstrated bexmarilimab’s ability to induce deep, clinically meaningful responses in these patients.
The FDA’s fast track designation strengthens the position of bexmarilimab as a potential cornerstone treatment for r/r MDS and supports its development towards full market approval. Additionally, this designation represents further recognition of the potential of myeloid cell reprogramming in overcoming resistance and activating the immune system in the treatment of various haematological and solid tumors.
