UK Market: The UK stock market was in an upbeat mood after the country got a new prime minister on Tuesday. Liz Truss, who served as the foreign secretary during Boris Johnson's tenure, took over as the new UK PM and the Conservative Party leader. The incoming PM has reportedly drafted plans to freeze energy bills to ease inflationary pressure on UK households. At around 12:30 pm GMT+1, the benchmark FTSE 100 was trading about 0.1% higher, while the FTSE 250 was up 1.11%.
Berkeley Group Holdings PLC (LON: BKG): Shares of the housebuilder rallied over 4% after the company said it was on the path to meeting its full-year profit target. The firm's forward sales rates are expected to be slightly ahead of last year.
Centrica Plc (LON:CNA): Shares of the energy utility company rose more than 2% after a news report claimed that it is in talks to secure credit worth billions of pounds. The development came as Liz Truss is expected to announce plans to deal with the energy crisis this week.
DS Smith PLC (LON: SMDS): Shares of the FTSE 100-listed packaging company jumped over 3% after it said its overall trading was in line with expectations. It anticipates growth of at least 2% for the whole year.
US Markets: The US market is likely to start in red, as indicated by the futures indices. S&P 500 future was down by 42.59 points or 1.07% at 3,924.26, while the Dow Jones 30 future was down by 1.07% or 337.98 points at 31,318.44. Meanwhile, the technology-heavy index Nasdaq Composite future was down by 1.31% or 154.26 points, at 11,630.86. (At the time of writing – 8:25 am ET).
Shares of the home improvement products retailer Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY) continued its losses, nosediving by 14.1% in the premarket trading session. This came after its CFO Gustavo Arnal committed suicide on Friday.
Shares of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) jumped 1.8% in the premarket trading session after investment bank Stifel termed it a 'long-term buying opportunity.'
