UK Market: The UK stock market overcome the initial hiccups due to rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine to trade in green for the most part of the day on Tuesday. The blue-chip FTSE 100 index is up by 0.35%, supported by upbeat earnings from prominent companies like Intercontinental Hotels Group Plc (2.99%) and Smith & Nephew Plc (5.64%). Meanwhile, the UK has announced sanctions on five Russian banks, including Black Sea Bank, General Bank, IS Bank, Rossiya, and Promsvyazbank.
Smith & Nephew Plc (LON: SN.): The medical equipment maker was up by over 5.5%, with a day’s high of GBX 1,243.50 after the company announced its results for the 12 months ended 31 December 2021. Its full-year reported revenue was up by 14.3% at USD 5,212 million.
Hargreaves Lansdown Plc (LON: HL.): The wealth management service provider’s share was down by over 15%, with a day’s low of GBX 1,010 after the company reported a decline in net new business activity for the six months ended 31 December 2021.
Coca-Cola HBC AG (LON: CCH): The bottling company was down by over 4%, with a day’s low of GBX 2,151 after it announced its full-year results for the year ended 2021. The market participants went for selling despite a 16.9% rise in net sales revenue.
US Markets: The US market is likely to open lower as indicated by the futures indices. S&P 500 future was down by 6 points or 0.14% at 4,338, while the Dow Jones 30 future was down by 0.31% or 104 points at 33,899. The technology-heavy index Nasdaq Composite future was down by 0.46% at 13,930 (At the time of writing – 8:50 AM ET).
US Market News:
The mattress company, Tempur Sealy (TPX), was down by over 5% in premarket trading after its quarterly revenues came below the market expectations. As per the company, the revenue was impacted due to rising input costs.
The publishing company, Houghton Mifflin (HMHC), was up by over 14% after the company agreed to a takeover bid by the private equity firm Veritas Capital. The total deal value is close to USD 2.8 billion.
