Closing Chapter for Socca Bistro in London's Prestigious Mayfair District
Socca, a French Riviera-inspired bistro in London's exclusive Mayfair district, officially announced its closure on November 30, 2024, marking the end of a short yet ambitious culinary venture. Co-owned by Channel 4 star Samyukta Nair and celebrated two-time Michelin-starred chef Claude Bosi, Socca had quickly become a notable name in London's competitive dining scene.

The closure announcement, which took many by surprise, highlights the unpredictable nature of the restaurant industry, even with established figures like Bosi involved. The renowned chef, known for his exceptional culinary skill and track record of Michelin stars, and Nair, a prominent figure in hospitality, had envisioned Socca as a place to bring the flavors and charm of the French Riviera to London.

A Mediterranean Journey Cut Short
Socca opened its doors in February 2023, following significant delays caused by extensive renovations. The venue, located in the heart of Mayfair, was designed by Tom Strother of Fabled Studio, transforming the former Richoux Mayfair site into a vibrant dining space. With seating for 79 guests indoors and a further 10 guests on its pavement-side terrace, Socca embodied a sophisticated blend of Mediterranean flavors and the laid-back elegance of the French Riviera.

The restaurant's menu featured Mediterranean-inspired dishes, with highlights such as rigatoni of octopus bolognaise, grilled sole with Menton lemon and caper butter, and slow-cooked lamb shoulder with jus Niçoise. Bosi’s expertise and Nair’s passion for hospitality were evident in the thoughtful and diverse menu offerings.

Tim Hayward of the Financial Times noted his admiration for Socca, expressing a deep appreciation for its concept and flavors, yet acknowledging the overwhelming richness of the experience. Despite this positive reception, the bistro could not overcome the financial and operational hurdles that many high-end establishments face.

A Heartfelt Farewell from the Co-Owners
In an emotional statement shared with patrons, Samyukta Nair expressed deep sadness over the closure, reflecting on the joy and satisfaction that came from watching guests enjoy the restaurant's offerings. She thanked the diners who had supported Socca during its brief existence and acknowledged the pride she felt in the collaboration with Bosi and the team.

Claude Bosi echoed Nair’s sentiments, emphasizing his gratitude toward the restaurant’s loyal guests and the pleasure of working alongside Nair in creating something unique. The closure of Socca serves as a reminder of the volatile nature of the restaurant industry, where even the most promising projects can face unexpected challenges.

While Socca may have closed its doors, the legacy of its Mediterranean flavors and the vision behind its creation will be remembered by those who dined there. The bistro’s brief yet impactful run in London’s Mayfair stands as a testament to the ambition and passion that went into the project, even if it was unable to endure in the highly competitive dining landscape.
