Highlights

  • Chilean authorities redirected CleanTech’s Special Lithium Operating Contract application into a public tender process

  • Company preparing to lodge an appeal under updated regulations announced earlier this year

  • Emphasis on community collaboration and Direct Lithium Extraction technology to support project ambitions

The lithium sector underpins the global shift to sustainable energy solutions, providing the critical material for battery storage in electric vehicles and renewable power systems. Companies with projects in major producing regions play a strategic role in securing supply chains. CleanTech Lithium PLC  has focused on its Laguna Verde site in Chile, seeking to advance resource development under national frameworks.

Regulatory Hurdles and Application Outcome

CleanTech’s bid for a Special Lithium Operating Contract at Laguna Verde was referred by Chile’s Ministry of Mining into a public tender procedure. This process is designed to enhance transparency and ensure competitive allocation of extraction rights. The public tender route aligns with the country’s National Lithium Strategy, which emphasizes oversight and broad participation in this critical industry.

Appeal Process and Company Response

Following the permit referral, CleanTech must initiate an appeal within a short response window defined by local regulations. The appeal will reference the comprehensive regulatory update published earlier in the year. Company leadership has indicated that further announcements will follow once the appeal lodgement is complete and reviewed by the Ministry of Mining.

Project Development and Community Collaboration

Extensive exploration and feasibility activities have been conducted at Laguna Verde, including detailed drilling campaigns and pilot plant design work. Central to these efforts is an ongoing dialogue with indigenous communities and regional stakeholders. Transparency initiatives and community benefit programs aim to integrate local priorities, supporting social licence to operate and fostering positive regional development.

Direct Lithium Extraction and Technical Advances

A core element of CleanTech’s strategy involves Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) methods, which offer more efficient recovery and reduced environmental impact compared to conventional brine processing. Pilot DLE operations and resource characterisation studies form the basis for scaling up to production. Technical teams are refining process parameters to optimise yield, manage water usage and align project development with evolving market demands.
