The UK Aluminium Industry Celebrates Innovation and Sustainability at ALFED 2024 Event
The Aluminium Federation (ALFED) hosted its highly anticipated Business Briefing and Annual Dinner in Windsor at the De Vere Beaumont Hotel, marking a significant milestone for the UK aluminium sector. The event, attended by over 150 members during the Business Briefing and more than 300 guests for the Annual Dinner, centered around the theme of "Inspiration." It highlighted the pivotal role of aluminium in driving innovation, sustainability, and industry collaboration.
The day commenced with a warm welcome from ALFED President Mark Allen, who underscored the strength and resilience of the UK aluminium sector. He reminded attendees that the future of the industry rests in their hands, urging them to embrace the opportunities ahead. Allen’s address set the tone for a day focused on progress and opportunity within the sector.
Keynote Presentations and Industry Insights
The morning's keynote presentation, delivered by Jim Davison, Regional Director at Make UK, explored the challenges facing UK manufacturing, including workforce shortages and declining apprenticeship uptake. Davison highlighted the importance of advocating for decarbonisation efforts, bolstering manufacturing support, and implementing policies to enhance competitiveness. His address emphasized the need for unity and collaboration in shaping the future of UK manufacturing, including the aluminium industry.
Bruce Alway and Saida Litosh from the London Stock Exchange (LSEG) provided a timely market update, analysing the shifting dynamics of global aluminium supply and demand. The presentation focused on the increasing demand for lightweight, sustainable materials in sectors like renewable energy and electric vehicles. It also called attention to the necessity of scaling up recycling efforts and fostering industry-wide collaboration to address market volatility.
The discussions continued with Christian Mildner of the London Metal Exchange (LME), who presented on the LMEPassport, a tool aimed at enhancing transparency and traceability in aluminium sourcing. His presentation also delved into the implications of the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), emphasizing the need for UK producers to adapt to evolving regulations. Pernelle Nunez from the International Aluminium Institute further stressed the importance of collaborative action in decarbonising the sector, outlining the urgency of significant investment to align the industry with international climate goals.
Business Strategies and Market Resilience
Carl Tomlinson’s session on working capital management resonated with attendees, offering practical strategies to improve financial resilience. His focus on cash flow management and balancing investments was particularly relevant in today’s uncertain economic climate.
One of the more unexpected yet engaging presentations came from Colin Bennett, who introduced the innovative use of aluminium extrusions in viticulture. Demonstrating the material’s lightweight, durable, and sustainable properties, Bennett showcased how aluminium is transforming practices in industries beyond manufacturing. The session ended with a wine tasting, adding a creative element to the day’s proceedings.
Annual Dinner and Evening Celebrations
The evening’s Annual Dinner saw over 300 guests gather to celebrate the industry’s achievements. The dinner was hosted by Michael Horan from Sherwood Stainless & Aluminium Ltd, with an emphasis on the camaraderie and collective commitment within the aluminium community.
A key highlight of the evening was the presentation of the inaugural ALFED Apprentice of the Year Award, which went to Seth Imray from Mechatherm International Ltd. Seth’s exceptional contributions to the industry exemplify the importance of investing in the next generation of leaders within the sector.
The evening culminated with a heartfelt keynote speech by Charlie Fogarty MBE, whose inspirational story captivated the audience. After surviving a life-changing brain injury, Fogarty’s remarkable recovery and subsequent achievements in sport earned him an MBE. His message about perseverance and overcoming adversity resonated deeply with attendees and added a personal touch to the night.
