Great Southern Copper PLC (GSCU) launched diamond drilling at Viuda Negra in northern Chile
Rock sampling returned industry benchmark assays for gold, silver and copper
Especularita project gains momentum with infrastructure support and strategic outreach
The mining sector underpins global industrial growth by supplying essential metals for technology, infrastructure and energy applications. Companies active in resource exploration seek new deposits that can replenish reserves and sustain production. Great Southern Copper PLC (LSE:GSCU) recently commenced a diamond drilling campaign at its Viuda Negra prospect, marking a key step in expanding its presence within Chile’s renowned coastal metallogenic belt.
Overview of the Drilling Campaign
Great Southern Copper deployed core rigs to test porphyry-epithermal style alteration zones exposed at surface. Multiple scout holes are planned to penetrate significant depths beneath outcropping veins. This initiative forms part of the broader Especularita project and follows extensive site preparation, including access road enhancements and environmental baseline studies to meet local permitting requirements.
Geological Context and Deposit Style
Viuda Negra lies within a belt known for large gold-copper systems associated with volcanic-hosted intrusions. Geological mapping has identified sheeted vein arrays and hydrothermal breccias akin to classic Maricunga-type deposits. Structural controls and alteration patterns suggest focused fluid conduits, which can create high-grade cores within broader mineralised envelopes.
Initial Sampling Results
Rock chip assays collected during prospecting returned values that exceed standard thresholds for precious and base metals. Gold readings surpassed typical industry benchmarks, silver values demonstrated notable strength and copper concentrations exceeded background levels. These surface indicators provide confidence in the prospect’s metal endowment and guide drill targeting along strike and at depth.
Project Infrastructure and Next Steps
Infrastructure advantages include proximity to sealed highways, power lines and port facilities that support efficient project development. Engagement with local communities and landowners has secured land access agreements and fostered regional collaboration. As drilling progresses, core logging and metallurgical test work will inform resource modelling. Pending encouraging results, follow-up drilling and expanded geochemical surveys will aim to delineate a maiden resource estimate.
