With the present nature of applications, devices and upcoming technological advancements, internet connectivity will continue to play an essential role in the livelihoods of people, as well as all the age-old to emerging businesses, even if they do not operate via online channels. The UK government has set out a multi-billion infrastructure project in order to bolster the connectivity in the hard-to-reach areas across various remote, as well as semi-urbanised localities.
Following the speedier transition to 5G, the need for a well-equipped infrastructure has intensified further. With an objective to facilitate fastest broadband connections to over a million hard-to-reach homes and businesses, the UK government via the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) has allocated £5 billion for Project Gigabit.

Project Gigabit
With the multi-billion pound investment to enhance the connectivity in the remote locations, the next generation gigabit broadband will help in setting up faster connections as the country recovers from the pandemic-laden situation. Scaling up the broadband infrastructure, the funding will assist the growth of broadband connections in various jurisdictions, including Cambridgeshire, Durham, Essex, Tess Valley, Cornwall, Dorset, Northumberland, and South Tyneside etc.
Under the aforementioned locations, up to 510,000 homes and businesses will be the first in the queue that are set to benefit from the recent investment boost. The existing speed of the respective connections in these localities will be amplified to more than one gigabit or 1,000 megabits per second. Following the successful completion of the infrastructure project, the families and enterprises that were facing difficulties with the broadband connections will get more bandwidth.
With the present regime of recommended work from home, the people living in rural and remote locations will be able to work more flexibly. In the first half of 2022, the contracts for these areas are expected to go to tender.
Gigabit broadband is being instituted at a rapid pace with the UK emerging as one of the major nations in Europe to incorporate fastest rollouts. At the moment, the authorities are proceeding ahead by enabling gigabit broadband in almost two in five households, it was one in ten households in 2019.
According to the DCMS estimates, half of all the households will have access to gigabit speeds by the end of the present calendar year.
The Project Gigabit is expected to expedite the recovery from Covid-19 pandemic, supporting the high growth sectors including technology and creative industries. The infrastructure project will further help in levelling up the country in terms of connectivity.
The Boris Johnson government is set to release an extra monetary cushion to the tune of £210 million to help escalate the connectivity for those with slow speeds. With the backing of government funding, the areas that are presently experiencing low connectivity and slow speeds will be prioritised.
Ameliorating further
The government will be relaunching the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme, under which the people and small-scale enterprises belonging to rural areas will get immediate financial support to get gigabit speeds. Furthermore, a sum close to £110 million has been set aside to upgrade public sector buildings, including the GP surgeries, schools, libraries that are located in the hardest to reach parts of the UK.
First launched in March 2018, the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme was set up to provide vouchers to eligible areas across the widespread geography of the UK that can cover the installation costs of establishing a gigabit connection in homes and businesses. The government has distributed over 66,000 vouchers to various premises across the UK so far.
The government further intends to connect up to 7,000 rural public buildings with the high-speed broadband connections that can help in improving the public services. Going ahead, the government is likely to announce the next procurements in June this year. Under this, as much as 640,000 premises in Hampshire, Worcestershire, Shopshire, the Isle of Wight, Suffolk and Norfolk will be connected to gigabit speeds.
