Writing is an art. Everybody can write but not everybody can write well. Some are born with inherent writing skills; such people have got the inbuilt creativity that fetches reader’s attention. However, some struggle with writing. There are people who have an interest in writing but sadly it is not their forte. But there is no worry because writing skills is also a craft which can be developed over time.

Developing the craft of writing!

What does it mean when people say, “develop writing skills”? It means you develop certain skills that make your piece interesting. A well-written piece is such in which the reader is engrossed throughout, and a great piece of writing would always induce constructive thoughts in the reader.

Sometimes a piece intends to invoke questions in the reader's head and some pieces are straightforward telling a story with an end goal. Whatever piece it may be, the purpose will only be fulfilled if the writer is able to communicate with the reader well.

However, not everybody is capable of communicating well through written pieces. But there is no dead-end here, as writing skills can be adapted and learned. Following are the ways how one can develop writing skills.

Clarity of thought: The first and the foremost important aspect for writing a good piece is to be clear with the thoughts. One should be absolutely clear in their head about the premise of the piece because if there’s confusion on the premise, the entire piece would go haywire.

Chain of thoughts and the build-up: After one is clear with the premise, they should frame the sub-topics in their head and convey them accordingly. The writer should be well-equipped to think about which information they want to reveal first. Build-up is essential for any interesting read.

Right use of words: This is another significant aspect. Choice of words and phrases matter a lot. What the writer wants to convey, everything depends upon the words they have written in their piece. Sometimes people use difficult words intentionally to make the piece look qualified; however, unnecessary difficult phrases might make the reader struggle.

No hideousness in the content: This is about writing ethics. No writer can excel if they don’t follow ethics. Writers should always reveal the necessary information and do not keep things hidden if those things can influence the end thought that the reader is left with at the end of the piece. The piece should be honest. This point is most essential for journalistic forms of writings.

Convey what is to be conveyed: In the end it is all about what the writer wants the reader to take away with them after they are done reading. It can be a couple of questions; it can be a straightforward message, or it can be a fantasy world where the writer wanted to send the reader to. Thus, make sure that your piece reaches that end conclusive statement so that you and your reader both feel satisfied at the end of the piece.
