5N Plus Inc., a leading global producer of specialty semiconductors and performance materials, has announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, AZUR SPACE Solar Power GmbH, has successfully completed its 2024 production capacity program ahead of schedule. This achievement has resulted in a 35% increase in production capacity, surpassing the original target of 30%. Looking ahead, AZUR intends to further boost its solar cell production capacity by an additional 30% by the end of 2025, primarily utilizing equipment that has already been purchased and delivered.
Gervais Jacques, President and CEO of 5N Plus, expressed optimism regarding AZUR's progress. "The completion of this program and actions being taken to further increase capacity through next year will enable AZUR to meet the growing needs of our strategic client-partners and maintain its momentum in generating revenues and increased profitability," he stated. Since becoming part of 5N Plus in late 2021, AZUR has significantly increased sales, reflecting both strong demand in the space sector and its established position as a leading provider of advanced solar cell technology.
The 2024 capacity program, initiated in early 2023, involved enhancements across all departments at AZUR, including epitaxy growth, cell production, assembly, and testing. The implementation of an additional shift allowed AZUR to transition to a 24/7 production schedule, which has been crucial in ramping up output. New equipment was installed to improve overall production yield, and automation processes were enhanced to streamline operations.
The planned 30% capacity increase through 2025 will be facilitated by the newly installed epitaxy reactors, which are essential for front-end production. These reactors utilize the metal-organic chemical vapor-phase epitaxy (MOVPE) technique, a vital process in creating multi-layer semiconductor crystals for AZUR's high-efficiency solar cells designed for space applications. Additionally, the capacity of tools used for the deposition of metals and dielectrics has been increased, with further automation enhancements expected soon.
On the eve of AZUR's 60th anniversary, Jacques emphasized the team’s dedication and operational expertise, stating, "The team at AZUR has much to celebrate and to be proud of. I would like to thank everyone across 5N Plus and AZUR for completing our 2024 program on plan and ahead of schedule. We will continue to work diligently to complete our 2025 production capacity program, as we seek to strengthen our position as a partner of choice to meet the evolving needs of our customers."
