Spectral AI Inc (TSX:EDT) has outlined its strategy for navigating U.S. regulatory requirements for the DeepView AI burn system, an innovative device designed to assess burn healing potential using multispectral imaging combined with advanced artificial intelligence technology.
Since receiving the FDA Breakthrough Device Designation in 2018, the DeepView AI burn system has been positioned to significantly impact burn care by providing rapid and accurate predictions on wound healing. This capability supports clinicians in making more informed treatment decisions, potentially transforming current approaches to burn management.
The company has now completed the enrollment of patients for a pivotal study conducted across several U.S. burn centers. This marks a critical milestone as Spectral AI prepares to pursue a De Novo submission in the second quarter of 2025. This submission is aimed at securing FDA clearance to classify the DeepView AI burn system as a Class II medical device. Achieving this approval would establish a new product category, underscoring the system’s unique and innovative features compared to existing solutions in the market.
The significance of this regulatory move is highlighted by Trudy Estridge, Spectral AI’s senior director of regulatory affairs. “The unique characteristics of DeepView AI-Burn meet criteria that, to our knowledge, no approved or cleared alternatives registered by the FDA currently possess,” Estridge stated. “Therefore, the company has decided to pursue a De Novo submission requesting classification of DeepView AI-Burn as a Class II medical device. This process provides a pathway for FDA clearance for low- or medium-risk medical devices with no existing predicate or no substantial equivalence.”
Peter Carlson, CEO of Spectral AI, acknowledged the challenges involved in developing such advanced healthcare solutions. He expressed gratitude to his team for their dedication and efforts. “As we pursue FDA submission for DeepView AI-Burn, we are following a process that we believe can capitalize on the platform nature of our DeepView System and expedite the commercialization of additional pipeline applications,” Carlson noted. “We look forward to our future with confidence.”
Spectral AI’s advancements in the DeepView AI burn system demonstrate a commitment to improving burn care and expanding the potential applications of its technology within the medical field. As the company moves forward, the successful navigation of the regulatory landscape will be a key factor in realizing the system’s full potential and contributing to advancements in patient care.
