TSX in green as tech & healthcare sectors gain, loonie up

The TSX Composite Index gained on Monday, April 4, by 132.65 points, 0.6 per cent, to 22,085.60 points with all major sectors in the green except for base metals. The tech sector gained over three per cent and the energy sector over 1.5 per cent. Stocks of Ballard Power Systems Inc rose 7.3 per cent.

The healthcare sector was in the green by 1.6 per cent and among the day’s top gainers were Canopy Growth Corp and Aurora Cannabis Inc that gained 5.3 and 4.9 per cent, respectively.

Volume actives

Whitecap Resources Inc saw 23.6 million shares traded, making it the most active stock. It was followed by Toronto-Dominion Bank that saw over 18.4 million shares switch hands, and TC Energy Corporation saw 17.4 million shares traded.

Movers and laggards

Wall Street updates

After it was revealed that Elon Musk has a 9.2 per cent stake in Twitter, the stocks of the company began soaring. The Dow increased by 103.61 points, 0.3 per cent, to 34,921.88 points, while the S&P 500 was up 36.78 points, 0.81 per cent, to 4,582.64 points. Nasdaq’s benchmark grew 271.05 points, 1.9 per cent, to 14,532.55.

Commodities update

Gold gained 0.18 per cent to US$ 1,929.20. The price of Brent oil was up 3.89 per cent and was at US$ 107.53/bbl and that of crude oil was up 4.98 per cent to US$ 103.28/bbl.

Currency news

The loonie gained 0.33 per cent compared to the US dollar while USD/CAD ended at 1.2486. The US Dollar Index was at 98.98 against the basket of major currencies, up 0.37 per cent.

Money market

The US 10-year bond yield was down by 0.3 per cent to 2.393 and the Canada 10-year bond yield was down by 0.08 per cent to 2.436.
