Highlights
- Currajong project delivers promising high-grade scandium results
- Rimfire Pacific Mining (RIM) eyes updated MRE by August 2025
- Global scandium supply risks increase demand for alternative sources
Rimfire Pacific Mining (ASX:RIM) is progressing confidently with its Currajong scandium prospect in New South Wales, with strong assay results from the second phase of air core drilling positioning the company to define a high-grade scandium resource. The development strengthens Rimfire's foothold in the critical minerals space, particularly as global interest in scandium rises due to export limitations from major suppliers.
Scandium Prospects Strengthen with Latest Drill Results
The latest batch of assay results has reinforced Currajong’s status as a high-potential scandium site. While an earlier projection aimed to finalise a mineral resource estimate (MRE) by June 2025, the company now targets August for completion, contingent on the timely receipt of additional assay data.
Current work is centered on the southern zone of the Currajong Ultramafic, with potential to extend into other anomalous areas as remaining data becomes available. These high-grade results support Rimfire’s broader ambitions in the Fifield region, where the company holds one of the most expansive scandium-prospective land packages.
Strategic Significance in a Changing Supply Landscape
Scandium's growing role in global clean technology and aerospace industries has heightened its strategic value. Recent Chinese export restrictions on rare earth elements, including scandium, have triggered concerns around the availability of this critical mineral. With China accounting for around 67% of primary scandium feedstocks and refining about 90% of the global supply, Rimfire’s Australian-based asset becomes increasingly important.
The current geopolitical environment underscores the demand for secure and independent scandium sources, especially for Western markets aiming to de-risk supply chains. Rimfire’s domestic resource development efforts align well with this trend, adding potential long-term value to its exploration initiative.
Broader Context: Critical Minerals in the Spotlight
Rimfire’s progress at Currajong coincides with broader industry interest in critical minerals across the ASX200, where companies are being closely watched for their role in building resilient supply networks.
As global markets recalibrate to address rare earth supply dynamics, Rimfire’s scandium project is well-positioned to benefit from heightened attention and demand. The company’s strategic advancements at Currajong reflect both its operational momentum and the increasing importance of securing future-facing mineral resources.
