International Graphite (ASX:IG6) has achieved impressive results with its Springdale project in Western Australia, as tests conducted by Japanese chemical processing specialist Marubeni Corporation have confirmed battery-grade specifications of over 99.95% purity. This high level of purity, reaching up to 99.97% total graphitic carbon (TGC), positions International Graphite as a significant player in the growing battery production and electric vehicle manufacturing sectors.
The tests were part of a bench-scale program that focused on purifying graphite concentrates from bulk extraction and drilling at the Springdale project in 2023. The success of these purification tests is vital for International Graphite’s future plans, particularly for meeting the high-quality material demands of the lithium-ion battery industry. Given that purity levels exceeding 99.95% TGC are required for battery anode specifications, these results further highlight the project's potential for contributing to the global demand for critical minerals.
In addition to the technical success, International Graphite has established a strong partnership with Marubeni Corporation. Marubeni is not only involved in testing but is also working with International Graphite to explore financial support for the project’s broader mine-to-market strategy. This collaboration aligns with Marubeni’s strategy to strengthen its position in securing critical minerals, particularly graphite, as Japan's battery and motor vehicle industries continue to expand. Marubeni has deep business ties in Australia, making this partnership particularly strategic for both companies.
International Graphite’s CEO, Andrew Worland, expressed confidence in the future of the company, thanks to the ongoing support from Marubeni. With Japanese firms investing heavily in global battery gigafactory developments, the need for reliable, high-quality graphite sources is growing. International Graphite, with its Australian-based operations, is well-positioned to meet this demand.
The technical testing, representatives from Marubeni visited the Springdale mining leases and International Graphite’s Collie research facility. This site visit was part of ongoing discussions surrounding the Springdale-Collie mine-to-market strategy, which involves extracting graphite from the world-class Mason Bay and Springdale Central deposits. With an estimated 49.3 million tonnes of graphite at 6.5% TGC, Springdale is ranked as the second-largest graphite deposit in Australia and one of the top 15 graphite developments globally.
The combination of high-purity results and strategic partnerships makes International Graphite a key player in the global supply of critical graphite materials for the evolving battery and electric vehicle markets.
