Highlights

  • AI-168 shows cardioprotection and outperforms beta blockers in studies.
  • International patent filed for AI-168, aiming for global market coverage.
  • Expanding therapeutic pipeline with AI-generated drug targets.

Algorae Pharmaceuticals (ASX:1AI) has reported encouraging findings from pre-clinical studies on its cardiovascular drug candidate, AI-168. Conducted at the Monash Victorian Heart Institute in Melbourne, the studies evaluated AI-168’s effectiveness against beta blockers, a widely used class of medication for cardiovascular conditions. AI-168 demonstrated superior cardioprotective qualities in in vitro models, restoring normal cell proliferation in cardiovascular cell lines affected by stressors such as PDGF and angiotensin II.

Restoring Cell Viability

A critical highlight of the study was AI-168’s ability to restore cell viability in endothelial cells exposed to high levels of angiotensin II. Within 48 hours of treatment, these cells regained normal proliferation, underscoring the drug’s potential to address cellular dysregulation caused by cardiac stress.

Addressing Global Cardiovascular Needs

Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of global mortality, accounting for nearly 17.9 million deaths annually. With aging populations and rising health risks like obesity and diabetes, the demand for innovative cardiovascular treatments is increasing. AI-168 is being assessed for various conditions typically treated with beta blockers, including hypertension, heart failure, arrhythmias, and angina.

International Patent Milestone

Algorae has bolstered its efforts to bring AI-168 to market by filing an international Patent Cooperation Treaty application. This allows the company to secure patent protection in key regions, including the US, Europe, Japan, and Australia. The application incorporates new data generated after the initial patent filing in November 2023, marking a significant step in AI-168’s development journey.

AI-Powered Drug Discovery Expansion

In addition to AI-168, Algorae’s proprietary AlgoraeOS artificial intelligence platform is driving the company’s expansion into oncology. With 24 new drug targets identified, the company is advancing research into areas with high unmet medical needs, such as breast cancer, leukemia, and glioblastoma. This progress highlights the versatility of AI-driven drug discovery in addressing complex medical challenges.

Strategic Collaborations

To further enhance its development efforts, Algorae has enlisted Dr. Sarah Siggins, a seasoned expert in pharmaceutical partnerships, to explore commercial opportunities for its AI-driven drug candidates. This strategic focus underscores the company’s commitment to delivering innovative therapies to global markets.

The promising pre-clinical results for AI-168 and advancements in AI-driven drug discovery position Algorae Pharmaceuticals (ASX:1AI) as a leader in developing next-generation treatments for critical health challenges.
