In a significant move for its renewable energy ambitions, SunCable has named Ryan Willemsen-Bell as its new Group Chief Executive. Known for his extensive experience in energy and infrastructure, Willemsen-Bell brings a wealth of knowledge to SunCable as it accelerates the development of its flagship project, the Australia-Asia PowerLink (AAPowerLink).
Willemsen-Bell's career spans several influential roles, most recently as the General Manager of Future Fuels and Carbon at Origin Energy (ASX:ORG). Having joined Origin in 2009, his focus has been on advancing emerging energy technologies and large-scale infrastructure projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions. Prior to his work in energy, Willemsen-Bell spent nearly a decade at Qantas (ASX:QAN), contributing to operational excellence and innovation.
The AAPowerLink, which is set to become Australia’s largest solar farm, plans to supply up to six gigawatts of renewable electricity to Darwin and Singapore. This ambitious project received federal government approval in August and conditional clearance from Singapore’s Energy Market Authority in October, solidifying its position as a transformative venture for the Asia-Pacific region.
SunCable is majority-owned by Grok Ventures, the private investment arm of Atlassian co-founder Mike Cannon-Brookes. In early 2023, Grok Ventures led a consortium to acquire the renewable energy firm, positioning it for strategic expansion. Since then, Mitesh Patel has served as interim CEO, steering the organization during this transition phase.
As SunCable’s new CEO, Willemsen-Bell is poised to drive the company’s mission to decarbonize the Asia-Pacific region. Reflecting on his appointment, he expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to lead a “nation- and region-defining project,” underscoring the importance of renewable energy in tackling climate challenges.
According to Grok Ventures CEO Tan Kueh, Willemsen-Bell’s leadership and expertise in developing large-scale energy solutions will be instrumental in the next phase of the AAPowerLink project. His appointment signals a step forward for SunCable’s ambitions to establish itself as a global leader in renewable energy infrastructure.
With key government approvals secured and fresh leadership at the helm, SunCable is well-positioned to shape the future of clean energy in the region, marking a major milestone in the journey toward decarbonization.
