- Telstra (TLS) welcomes new executive from Microsoft
- Leadership transition set for September 2025
- Strategic alignment with tech and AI infrastructure
Telstra Group Ltd (ASX:TLS), a prominent name among ASX200 companies, has announced a significant leadership change that brings a seasoned tech executive into its ranks. Steven Worrall, currently the Managing Director of Microsoft Australia and New Zealand, will be joining Telstra InfraCo as CEO from 1 September 2025. This transition follows the planned retirement of current InfraCo CEO, Brendon Riley, set for 30 September 2025.
InfraCo is Telstra’s digital infrastructure division, distinct from its more widely known mobile services. Since its inception under Riley’s leadership, InfraCo has grown into a key player in Australia's telecom infrastructure ecosystem. Worrall’s appointment signals Telstra’s ambitions to further strengthen this unit’s capabilities, particularly in technology, AI, and digital connectivity.
Worrall brings over three decades of experience in the tech sector. Prior to his 11-year tenure at Microsoft, he spent 22 years at IBM in various leadership roles, including head of its global WebSphere software business. At Microsoft, Worrall led a team of more than 3,000 professionals and collaborated with over 10,000 partners and software vendors. His experience spans not only enterprise software but also AI and cloud solutions—fields that are increasingly important for infrastructure innovation.
Telstra’s CEO, Vicki Brady, praised Worrall’s collaborative leadership style and his successful track record in building tech-focused partnerships. Notably, he played a role in Microsoft’s recent AU$5 billion investment in cloud and AI infrastructure across Australia, highlighting his relevance to Telstra’s forward-looking infrastructure strategies.
This executive transition aligns with Telstra’s broader objective of transforming InfraCo into a leading digital infrastructure business. The move is also closely watched by market participants interested in established ASX dividend stocks, as Telstra remains a key player in this category.
