U.S. shares lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 1.06%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Oil&Gas, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.06%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.74%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.58%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which rose 0.66% or 1.79 points to trade at 271.62 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 0.16% or 0.30 points to end at 190.29 and Johnson&Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was up 0.04% or 0.06 points to 144.44 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Unitedhealth Group (NYSE:UNH), which lost 3.76% or 18.96 points to trade at 484.72 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 2.99% or 0.93 points to end at 30.13 and Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) shed 2.41% or 8.36 points to 338.11.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE:MRO) which rose 8.43% to 28.68, Universal Health Services Inc (NYSE:UHS) which was up 2.83% to settle at 180.14 and United Airlines Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:UAL) which gained 2.35% to close at 51.83.

The worst performers were American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which was down 13.54% to 11.62 in late trade, Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO) which lost 4.82% to settle at 155.69 and Constellation Energy Corp (NASDAQ:CEG) which was down 4.41% to 220.74 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Innovative Eyewear Inc (NASDAQ:LUCY) which rose 131.46% to 0.95, Brand Engagement Network Inc (NASDAQ:BNAI) which was up 107.87% to settle at 2.64 and Onconetix Inc (NASDAQ:ONCO) which gained 79.93% to close at 0.29.

The worst performers were Applied UV Inc (OTC:AUVIQ) which was down 76.28% to 0.07 in late trade, Faraday Future Intelligent Electric Inc (NASDAQ:FFIE) which lost 62.03% to settle at 0.44 and Cue Health Inc (NASDAQ:HLTH) which was down 39.51% to 0.05 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2365 to 508 and 43 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2413 fell and 935 advanced, while 119 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 10.53% to 14.28.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.83% or 19.50 to $2,337.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 0.94% or 0.75 to hit $79.08 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.83% or 0.70 to trade at $83.24 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.50% to 1.08, while USD/JPY rose 0.34% to 157.69.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.51% at 105.07.
