Highlights
- Livium receives state grant to develop a WA battery recycling facility.
- Facility to enhance national battery collection and recycling capacity.
- Initiative aligns with environmental goals, supporting local e-waste processing.
Livium Ltd has been awarded an A$850,000 grant by the Western Australian Government to develop a specialized battery recycling facility as part of a state-funded initiative aimed at advancing electronic waste (e-waste) infrastructure. This financial boost supports Livium's broader mission to foster a sustainable battery recycling ecosystem across Australia.
The funding aligns with Western Australia’s goal to increase the reuse, storage, collection, processing, and recycling of electronic waste, creating new employment opportunities while furthering the state’s circular economy. According to Livium's CEO and managing director, Simon Linge, the support from the WA Government represents a vital step in building a nationwide recycling framework focused on efficiency and sustainability.
Supporting Local Recycling with New WA Facility
Livium plans to utilize this grant through its subsidiary, Envirostream Australia Pty Ltd, establishing a facility in WA dedicated to battery collection, sorting, discharge, and temporary storage. This local operation will enable the initial processing of batteries, which will then be transported to Envirostream’s primary processing plant in Campbellfield, Victoria. The final phase at Campbellfield will transform the collected materials into Mixed Metal Dust (MMD) and other recoverable metals, which are critical for reuse in various industrial applications.
By developing this WA-based facility, Livium aims to expand its national recycling infrastructure and strengthen its capacity to manage e-waste sustainably. This approach supports the company’s broader goal of establishing a self-sufficient battery recycling network that can accommodate growing e-waste volumes and contribute to national resource recovery efforts.
State Funding Boosts WA’s Recycling Infrastructure
The recent grant is part of a larger A$5.4 million funding allocation from the WA Government, aimed at bolstering the state’s recycling capabilities. With this latest investment, WA has committed nearly A$10 million to enhance its e-waste processing infrastructure. The initiative seeks to reduce dependence on overseas disposal, in line with Australia’s environmental sustainability objectives, by increasing local recycling options and building a comprehensive collection network.
The new facility in WA is expected to play a key role in Livium’s strategic plan to develop a sustainable, end-to-end battery recycling system across Australia. This move is anticipated to not only reduce the environmental impact of e-waste but also help recover valuable metals, contributing to the creation of a circular economy.
Livium’s long-term strategy envisions additional recycling capabilities in other states once minimum collection volumes are achieved. This expanded approach supports the goal of strengthening Australia’s position in the global battery recycling industry while promoting a greener future through the efficient management of e-waste.
