Market Close Commentary; 21 August 2020

The Australian share market today followed yesterday's pattern and again had a depressing session. The market is closed for the week, and the benchmark index settled at 6111.2, dipped by 0.14 per cent when compared to yesterday's closure of 6120.

The virus crisis continues in Australia; Victoria reported nine COVID-19 related deaths and 179 new cases today.

In the US stock market on Thursday, NASDAQ Composite surged by 1.06 per cent, Dow Industrials was up by 0.17 per cent, and the S&P 500 increased by 0.32 per cent.

The commodity section today at AEST 2:57 PM - the Australian Dollar was up by 0.03 per cent and was trading at AUD 0.7193, gold grew by 0.03 per cent; it was trading at USD 1947.99. If we talk about Crude oil, it gained 0.05 per cent and was trading at USD 42.84 a barrel.

The stocks that exceeded others in today's trading session are:

  • Webjet Limited (ASX:WEB)was the top gainer today which traded at AUD 3.60, up by 11.80 per cent.
  • Suncorp Group Limited (ASX:SUN)remained the second top gainer. It traded at AUD 9.65 and was up by 11.047 per cent.

The stocks that suffered the most today are:

  • OZ Minerals Limited (ASX:OZL) traded at AUD 14.18 and was dipped by 4.576 per cent.
  • IDP Education Limited (ASX:IEL) traded at AUD 18.43, down by 3.86 per cent.
