Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin sues US govt over space contract
Jeff Bezos' space transport company Blue Origin has filed a lawsuit in a federal court against the US government over NASA’s decision to award a US$2.9 billion space contract to Elon Musk's SpaceX.
Justifying the move, the company said the lawsuit is an attempt to rectify the shortcomings in NASA’s acquisition process for the Human Landing System.
The case was filed in the US Court of Federal Claims on Friday.
Blue Origin stressed the flaws must be addressed to restore fairness and create healthy competition.
In July, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) had backed NASA’s decision to pick SpaceX despite protest from Blue Origin.
Jeff Bezos' company argued that NASA was required to make multiple awards instead of one. But GAO rejected the argument that NASA acted wrongly in making a single award to SpaceX.
The US space agency now must file a response to Blue Origin’s challenge by October 12, Reuters reported.
US auto safety agency opens probe into Tesla’s autopilot feature
US regulators said on Monday that they opened a probe into the Tesla car’s autopilot feature following a series of crashes since 2018. The inspectors are expected to check some 765,000 vehicles built since 2014 for defects in the autopilot system.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), it has recorded at least 11 accidents of Tesla vehicles since January 2018.
The safety agency said that it had details of 17 injuries and one death in the crashes. It is suspected that the vehicle's autopilot system could be the culprit. Tesla shares fell 5% after the news.
The NHTSA may either impose restrictions or demand a recall of the vehicles after the investigation.
In the past, Tesla CEO Elon Musk had defended the car’s autopilot system stating that it lowers the chances of accidents 10 times than an average vehicle.
