Toyota Motor Corp is a Japanese automobile company which manufactures and sells passenger cars, sport-utility vehicles, buses, and trucks across the globe.

The company also manufactures pleasure boats and develops intelligent transport system, including electronic toll collection and radar cruise control system.

The company was earlier a division of Toyota Industries Corporation till 1937. Toyota Motor Sales and Toyota Motor Company merged to create the present entity in 1982.

The company operates through approximately 201 affiliated companies and 528 consolidated national and international subsidiaries. As many as 72 companies are owned through equity method, it claims.

The automotive company is headquartered in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

The company reportedly sold over 8,900 vehicles in 2020 fiscal.


The automotive operations include manufacturing, designing, assembly and marketing of minivans, commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles. In addition, it is also engaged in providing parts and accessories related to automotive vehicles.


The Japanese company also provides financing solutions to dealers and customers, retail installment credit and leasing services.

The company’s stocks trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol ‘TM’.

Some of the subsidiaries include Lexus, Hino Motors, Toyota Gazoo Racing, Toyota Auto body, etc.

Another subsidiary Daihatsu Motor Co, Ltd produces and sells compact cars and mini vehicles.
Hino Motors is engaged in the manufacturing and marketing of commercial vehicles such as buses and trucks.

The company sells luxury hybrid-powered vehicles under the brand Lexus. In 2017, it introduced LC, a new flagship model under Lexus.

The Japanese firm also manufactures and sells sport-utility vehicles in the North American segment, including the Highlander, 4Runner, the RAV4, Sequoia and the Land Cruiser. In addition, Tacoma and Tundra are pickup truck brands.

Presently, the automotive company operates through various assembling and distribution plants located across the globe.

Some of the subsidiaries are engaged in manufacturing of automatic looms, synthetic resins, woolen and cork materials, etc.

In 2016, Toyota reportedly launched Scion brand to attract the millennials.

The company claims to generate majority of revenue from its presence in Japan and the United States.

Toyota is said to be among the world’s largest car manufacturing company.

Other leaders in the sector includes Volkswagen, General Motors, Nissan, Hyundai, etc.
