Founded in 1804, Schroders Plc is a global assets management company, which offers solutions to firms, intermediaries, and individuals. The company has broadly two business segments: asset management and investment capital, comprising of equities, multi-asset, fixed income, private asset & alternatives, and wealth management. Its major business areas are private assets & parallels, mutual funds, wealth management at individual as well as at institutional level. The asset management segment covers advisory services for equity, fixed income, solutions for multi-asset solutions and private assets. The wealth management segment includes wealth planning, and banking services.

The company has operations in 37 locations across the world, with most in the UK (48%), the Americas (15%), Europe, the Middle East and Africa (19%) and the Asia-Pacific (18%). The company has received an excellent investment management quality rating from Fitch Ratings from 16 consecutive years, which reflects the company’s viability of the business for long term. From three years, 72% of the company’s client assets have outperformed their respective benchmarks. The company has 94% retention of highly rated employees and has achieved the 33% target of female representation in senior management.

SDR gets it name from the renowned Schröder family, which is a famous Hanseatic family of Hamburg. The Schroder family, through trustee companies, individual ownership, and charities, holds 47.93% of the company's ordinary shares.

Historically, SDR’s parent company was founded in 1804 when John Henry joined his brother John Frederick. Both floated J. Henry Schröder & Co. in London in 1818, and got the company listed in London in 1959. In 1923, J Henry Schroder Banking Corporation started operating in New York. Further, the group acquired Helbert, Wagg & Co in 1962. Other major acquisitions were: 50% share in investment bank Wertheim & Co. in 1986. The company expanded its operations across Europe, and overseas locations, such as Australia Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan.

The company played a defining part in the privatisation drive by the UK government in 1980s.In 2000, the company let go its investment banking arm to Citigroup for a whopping £1.3 billion.
