AT&T is enhancing its commitment to renewable energy through a significant partnership with Enbridge for the upcoming Orange Grove Solar project in Texas. This initiative marks a pivotal step in both companies' strategies to support sustainable energy solutions.
Enbridge, a major player in energy infrastructure, has unveiled plans to build and operate the Orange Grove Solar project near Corpus Christi, Texas. Scheduled for completion in late 2025, this ambitious project will contribute 130 megawatts (MW) of solar power to the local grid, bolstering the region's clean energy resources.
In a strategic move, AT&T has secured a long-term virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with Enbridge for the full output of the Orange Grove Solar project. This agreement is a key element of AT&T's energy management strategy, enabling the telecom giant to offset its energy costs while significantly reducing its carbon footprint. By locking in the solar power generated by Orange Grove, AT&T is not only advancing its sustainability goals but also ensuring a steady and predictable energy supply.
The Orange Grove Solar project represents Enbridge's inaugural foray into solar energy within Texas, a state where the company already operates three wind energy facilities. The project will span 920 acres and utilize approximately 300,000 solar panels, positioning it as a major contributor to the local renewable energy landscape. During its construction phase, the project is expected to generate between 150 and 250 jobs, providing a boost to the regional economy.
Matthew Akman, Executive Vice President of Corporate Strategy and President of Enbridge's Power business, emphasized the significance of the Orange Grove project. "Orange Grove is a key part of our commitment to developing, constructing, and operating onshore renewable projects across North America," Akman stated. He highlighted the successful advancement of the project to its construction phase and the securing of the VPPA with AT&T as a testament to Enbridge's capabilities and dedication to expanding its renewable energy portfolio.
Enbridge's commitment to renewable energy is substantial, with over US$7 billion invested in renewable energy and power transmission projects across North America and Europe. The company currently owns and operates seven solar energy facilities across various U.S. states, including Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
The Orange Grove Solar project not only exemplifies Enbridge's dedication to expanding its renewable energy footprint but also underscores AT&T's proactive approach to integrating sustainable energy solutions into its operations. As both companies advance their respective goals, the Orange Grove project stands as a notable milestone in their journey toward a greener future.
