The open pit mine has reportedly produced 1.56 million ounces of precious metals, including 1.19 million ounces of palladium and 0.37 million ounces of platinum and gold.
The infrastructure consists of existing rails, road, utilities and supplier networks.
Polymet claims to be the first company to explore copper, nickel and other precious metals at Duluth Complex located in the eastern end of the Mesabi Iron Range. In addition, it has permission to explore non-ferrous metals and has reportedly become the first publicly traded to operate at the site.
The company as established as Fleck Resources Ltd, which rebranded itself as PolyMet in 1981.
In 1969, United States Steel Corporation discovered the NorthMet deposits.
PolyMet also holds 100% interest through renewable mineral lease and private mineral owners such as U.S. Utilities.
The company’s stocks trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol 'POM'.
In March 2019, Polymet reportedly became the first fully permitted company to operate and mine copper-nickel and other precious metals in northern Minnesota. The company received a permit from state and federal agencies and claims to be committed to fulfilling all permit conditions and following the responsible environmental approach.
