Metro Inc is one of the largest grocery operators in Canada. Headquartered in Montreal, Metro primarily functions as a food and pharmacy retailer, franchisor, distributor and manufacturer in the provinces of Québec and Ontario.
Metro first came into being in year 1947 as ‘Magasins Lasalle Stores ltée’, after a group of independent grocery retailers banded together. After about 25 years, in 1972, the enterprise was rebranded as ‘les Marchés d'Aliments Metro ltée’. This, the company says, was its first attempt of offering the “supermarket concept” to its customers.
The company operates a network of some 950 food stores and 650 drugstores in Québec, Ontario and New Brunswick. Its food store banners include Metro, Food Basics, Adonis, Metro Plus, Première Moisson and Super C. Meanwhile, its drugstore banners include Jean Coutu, Metro Pharmacy, Food Basics Pharmacy and Brunet.
Metro claims to have about 1,600 points of sale and 15 distribution centres, making it one of the largest private employers in Québec with about 90,000 people employed.
In 2020, Metro Inc launched a renewed version of the Life Smart brand by uniting all of its healthier food items under a single line.
The retail chain has also introduced its very first line of organic baby products, named as Personnelle, as the result of a collaboration between its food and pharmacy teams.
Metro Inc has increased visibility for local products and collaborations with regional suppliers in Québec and Ontario banners, to support the local economy amid the novel coronavirus crisis.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company is also said to have donated around C$ 4 million to its community partners to help them address the increase in the need for food aid and other essential services. It also launched a program named ‘One More Bite’ that aims to recover and redistributed tonnes of food among the community.
