Description
"Alexco Resource Corp is a mining and exploration company with major operations in Yukon Territory.
The exploration and development projects include silver, zinc, lead, and gold deposits in Keno Hill Silver District. The district hosts four deposits, namely Lucky Queen, Bermingham, Flame & Moth and Bellekeno.
The company claims that the Keno Hill Silver District is known for high-grade silver resources. It is situated 350 kilometers to the north of Whitehorse in Yukon Territory. The district reportedly has a stable infrastructure with access to a highway connecting Whitehorse to Mayo and the national power grid.
According to the Minelfile database of the Yukon Government, the district was responsible for the production of 200 million ounces of silver from more than 5.3 metric tons of ore between 1913 and 1989, which made the Keno Hill Silver District Canada’s second-largest silver producer.
The company operates through two wholly-owned subsidiaries: Elsa Reclamation & Development company Ltd and Alexco Keno Hill Mining Corp. The subsidiaries are engaged in holding and acquiring quartz mining leases in the Canadian silver district.
Alexco’s Bellekeno silver mine was reportedly the largest producer of high-grade silver in Canada from 2011 to 2013. In 1989, the company says that the previous owners of United Keno Hill Mines Ltd discontinued their mining activities due to falling prices and increased environmental standards.
The mineral exploration company says that the operations at Bellekeno were suspended in 2013, and two new high-grade silver mines were discovered. However, in June 2020, the company decided to restart the production of silver at Keno Hill.
The Canadian company was founded in 2005 and approved for listing on TSX in 2006.
In addition, it acquired a local environmental consulting firm and several properties in Keno Hill Silver District in 2006.
The following year it got listed on the NYSE-AMEX. In 2009, it augmented the exploration activities at Lucky Queen and Onek mines and expanded its presence in the United States and South America.
The company discovered Fame & Moth deposits in 2010. In 2011, the commercial production commenced at Bellokeni mines and produced 2.02 million ounces, Alexco Resources claims.
In 2012, Alexco’s reportedly announced an increase in its silver resource by 52 per cent due to findings of initial resource estimate at Birmingham and Flame & Moth exploration targets.
