ASX 200 closes marginally higher; utilities leads gains

  • The ASX 200 benchmark index closed up today (19 October), gaining 20.90 points or 0.31% to end at 6,800.10 points.
  • Over the last five days, the index has gained 2.30%, but is down 8.66% for the last year to date.
  • Utilities was the biggest gainer, advancing 0.95% followed by industrials which ended 0.90% up.

The S&P/ASX200 closed on a higher note today (19 October), gaining 20.90 points or 0.31% to end at 6,800.10 points.

Key pointers from ASX close today

  • The ASX 200 benchmark index closed up today, gaining 20.90 points or 0.31% to end at 6,800.10 points.
  • Novonix Limited (ASX:NVX) and Core Lithium Ltd (ASX:CXO) gained the most on the index, moving ahead 18.99% and 8.24%
  • Megaport Limited (ASX:MP1) and St Barbara Limited (ASX:SBM) fell 22.14% and 4.76%
  • Over the last five days, the index has gained 2.30%, but is down 8.66% for the last year to date.
  • Nine out of 11 sectors closed in green today.
  • Utilities was the biggest gainer, advancing 0.95% followed by industrials which ended 0.90% up.
  • The All-Ordinaries Index gained 0.34%.

Newsmakers

Carnavale Resources (ASX:CAV): Carnavale Resources (CAV) has recently delivered its highest quality gold delivery to date.

Drilling 105 aircore holes for 8885 metres as part of the company's third aircore programme at the project was done to follow up earlier gold intercepts at the Carnage and Highlander targets.

Meanwhile, shares of Carnavale Resources closed flat at AU$0.0060 on ASX today.

Minerals 260 (ASX:MI6): Minerals 260 has decided against acquiring the Ti Tree project in Western Australia's Gascoyne region.

Earlier this month, the company had revealed its intention to acquire the property by purchasing Capricorn Orogen, which holds 100% of Ti Tree.

Meanwhile, shares of Minerals 260 closed at AU$0.30, down 4.76% on ASX today.

Global markets

On Tuesday, October 18, US markets advanced for the second straight day as investors' confidence was boosted by better than expected third-quarter corporate reports.

The S&P 500 rose 1.14% to 3,719.98. The Dow Jones was up 1.12% to 30,523.80. The NASDAQ Composite gained 0.90% to 10,772.40, and the small-cap Russell 2000 rose 1.16% to 1,755.96.

In Asia, the Asia Dow was 0.95% up while Nikkei in Japan increased by 0.60% while Shanghai Composite in China fell 0.65% and the Hang Seng in Hong Kong decreased 1.35% at 4.10 PM AEDT.

In commodities markets

Crude Oil WTI was spotted trading at US$83.51/bbl while Brent Oil was at US$90.38bbl at 4.11 PM AEDT.

Gold was at US$1646.31 an ounce, copper was at US$3.377/lbs and iron ore was at US$95.00/T at 4.11 PM AEDT.
