Facing heat over its involvement with cryptocurrency, Mozilla Foundation on Thursday announced that it would press the pause button on accepting cryptocurrency donations. The non-profit organisation that makes the Firefox web browser faced severe backlash from many, including Jamie Zawinski, a founder of the Mozilla Project, ever since it announced its policy to accept donations in cryptocurrencies. Mozilla started accepting Bitcoin for donations in 2014.

Cryptocurrencies have received significant criticism for their negative impact on the environment. The other criticism is due to the fact that the majority of the global crypto wealth appears to be currently stored with limited people.

On 3 January 2022, Zawinski said: “Everyone involved in the project should be witheringly ashamed of this decision to partner with planet-incinerating Ponzi grifters.”

Responding to the criticism, Mozilla said in a Twitter thread: “Last week, we tweeted a reminder that Mozilla accepts cryptocurrency donations. This led to an important discussion about cryptocurrency’s environmental impact.”

Mozilla added that it would be “reviewing if and how our current policy on crypto donations fits with our climate goals.” It noted that while the review was in place, it will be pausing crypto donations.

Meanwhile, Mozilla is not the only company to have faced heat over its policy to accept donations in cryptocurrency. Juts last year, Elon Musk-run Tesla faced a backlash for its decision to accept Bitcoin as a mode of payment. The company soon reversed the policy. There are several gaming companies that have recently been heavily criticised for their efforts around NFTs.
