Highlights

  • UK grocery sales growth slowed due to consumers holding back for Christmas and Black Friday promotions.
  • Discount retailers Lidl and Ocado saw significant growth, with Marks & Spencer also experiencing an increase in market share.
  • Despite a cautious consumer market, leading supermarkets like Tesco and Sainsbury's posted steady growth.

The UK retail sector recently experienced a deceleration in sales growth, as consumers adopted a more cautious approach to spending ahead of holiday sales and promotions. According to industry data from market researcher NIQ, supermarket sales increased over the last month but at a slower pace than the previous month. This trend reflects consumer sentiment shaped by economic challenges and an anticipation of better shopping deals during the Christmas and Black Friday periods.

Impact on Supermarkets and Spending Habits

The NIQ report highlights a 4.0% year-on-year increase in UK supermarket sales over the four weeks ending November 2, showing a slight decline from the previous growth rate. This slowdown underscores consumer caution, with many shoppers cutting back on grocery essentials to allocate more for seasonal indulgences. Mike Watkins, NIQ’s UK head of retailer and business insight, noted the presence of a "polarised consumer" landscape in the UK, with half of the households still experiencing financial strain. This sentiment is driving restrained spending behaviors among many UK consumers.

Changes in General Merchandise Sales

In line with the general trend, sales of non-food items, or general merchandise, also felt the impact of consumer caution. NIQ reported a 1.4% drop in general merchandise sales in value terms, while volume sales decreased more significantly. This reduction suggests that shoppers are prioritizing essential goods and cutting back on other discretionary purchases, waiting for potential holiday discounts.

Online and Discount Grocers Lead Growth

The data from NIQ reveals that online and discount grocery sectors saw the most substantial growth, highlighting a shift in consumer preferences. Online grocer Ocado and discounter Lidl emerged as the top performers over the last twelve weeks, with Ocado achieving a growth rate of 16.1%, while Lidl posted an 11.9% increase. This growth suggests that consumers are seeking out budget-friendly and convenient shopping options, favoring retailers that offer either low-cost or online accessibility.

Market Performance of Key Supermarket Players

Marks & Spencer ranked third in growth among UK grocers, reflecting a solid performance with an 11.4% rise in sales. Meanwhile, market leaders Tesco and Sainsbury's also maintained positive momentum, reporting gains of 4.7% and 4.6%, respectively. Despite overall market challenges, these major players managed to strengthen their positions, suggesting a resilience in consumer demand for well-established brands.
