Australian legend Ricky Ponting has described India and Pakistan's classic match at the MCG as the best sporting contest he has ever seen.

The Twenty20 World Cup is still going but it is unlikely anything for the rest of the tournament will top the night 90,293 fans witnessed an epic contest between world sport's most famous rivals.

Ponting, Australia's all-time most prolific batter, was still marvelling at the spectacle.

"The India Pakistan game here the other night, I think that's as good as sporting contests I've probably ever seen and that's across a lot of different codes and different years," the three-time ODI World Cup winner said at the MCG on Thursday.

"Even watching at home you could almost feel the atmosphere coming through the TV screen.

"You've got one of the all-time legends of the game (in Virat Kohli) batting with eight balls to go and 28 runs to get and somehow they managed it; it was just amazing."

One of cricket's most respected voices, Ponting's affirmation will only help calls for India and Pakistan to play each other more often.

Matches between India and Pakistan have always been highly anticipated, ever since the first Test series between the cricket-mad nations in 1952.

In modern times, the rivalry has been restricted to major tournaments, with India and Pakistan not playing each other in a bilateral series since 2012 due to ongoing tensions between the countries.

But the success of India-Pakistan games at world cups has only fuelled desire for them to battle on neutral territory.

India legend Ravi Shastri said 150,000 people would attend a game between the famous rivals if capacity allowed and could see bilateral matches being held at big stadiums in Australia.

Former Australia allrounder Simon O'Donnell told SEN this week there were already "discussions" being had about an India-Pakistan series taking place down under.
