A man who bound and gagged a Melbourne mother before kidnapping her two children has been found guilty of assaulting the woman.

Jiangang Ji admitted five charges over his offending Melbourne's east in August 2021, where he kidnapped two young kids, put them inside the family's Mercedes-Benz and demanded a $1 million ransom for their safe return.

He pleaded guilty to two kidnapping offences, false imprisonment, aggravated burglary and theft of a vehicle.

However, Ji faced a jury trial in Victoria's County Court after pleading not guilty to assaulting the children's mother and two other charges.

Ji broke into the family's Blackburn North home armed with a knife about 6.30am on August 23, after parking out the front and waiting for the father to leave for work, the jury was told previously.

Once inside, he confronted the woman, tied her hands and legs together, and taped her mouth shut.

Ji took her two children, aged three and five, and put them inside the boot of the family's Mercedes-Benz, before returning to the house where he assaulted the mother with a knife.

He then left, abducting the kids in the family car. Police found the children in the back seat of the Mercedes outside Ji's home in Mitcham after about 12 hours.

Jurors retired to deliberate on their verdict over the remaining three charges on Monday, returning on Wednesday morning.

"Guilty," the jury foreperson said to each charge.

Judge Gabriele Cannon thanked jurors for their service and discharged them.

Ji was taken back into custody and will return to the court on August 2 for a pre-sentence hearing.
