Picasso inspiration for Vic kids' art game

Children are invited to get creative when the National Gallery of Victoria brings artistic activities to all corners of the state.

The Kids on Tour program encourages Victorian kids to call on inspiration from the world around them for drawings, sculptures, poems, portraits and collages.

This year's theme is 'Let's make art'.

The free activities share the working methods of leading European artists featured in the gallery's recent Picasso Century exhibition.

Artists such as Georges Braque, Remedios Varo, Pablo Picasso, and Natalia Goncharova lived and worked in Paris in the early 20th century and are recognised for their innovative and experimental approaches to making art.

Gallery director Tony Ellwood said the program has provided young Victorians across the state with the opportunity to engage with art, design and culture from around the world since it began in 2014.

"The 2023 NGV Kids on Tour program will be our largest yet, extending a diverse range of free art-making activities for kids, teens and families to over 130 community organisations right across Victoria," he said.

Program activities include children taking turns to draw one part of a creature, resulting in wild and original creations, and the making of tabletop sculptures reminiscent of Picasso's scale models.

NGV Kids on Tour 2023 runs from January 14 to 22 at venues across regional and metropolitan Victoria.
