The West Australian Government has released 3 million hectares of Crown land (government land) for carbon farming to mitigate climate change and improve biodiversity. WA government announced to invite high-level carbon farming concept proposals in FY22.

The unallocated government land Crown land –is managed by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. The land will now be released as part of the state’s carbon for a conservation project to help the private businesses partner with the traditional owners and the state government to create large-scale farming projects in WA. The release of 3 million government land is also an initiative to create new green jobs for the local workers.

The carbon farming areas on the Crown land are likely to take advantage of “diversification lease” – a new type of land tenure that changes the land tenure laws announced by the WA state government last month.

As per the new land tenure, the diversification lease will give projects non-exclusive possession, allowing them to coexist with other land uses in the same region.

This initiative will likely support on-ground solutions to offsetting carbon emissions through new investments. The traditional landowners will be integral to the new carbon initiative, and new projects will be executed upon landowners’ approval.
