Founded in 1969 with the merger The Chartered Bank of India, China and Australia, and Standard Bank of British South Africa, Standard Chartered Plc is a leading international banking and financial services company that helps individuals and businesses prosper across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The bank operates a network of over 1,200 branches and outlets including joint ventures, subsidiaries and associates across 59 markets and serves customers in around 150 markets worldwide. It is a universal bank which offers consumer, corporate and institutional banking, and treasury services. The bank’s largest shareholder is the Government of Singapore-owned Temasek Holdings. Although the bank is based in the UK, its 90% of business comes from Africa, Asia and Middle East. The bank has a primary listing on the London Stock Exchange as LON: STAN and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. It has secondary listing on the National Stock Exchange of India, Hong Kong Stock Exchange, and OTC Markets Group Pink.
The bank aims to drive commerce and prosperity through its unique diversity. It operates through four client segments that include Retail Banking, Commercial Banking, Corporate & Institutional Banking and Private Banking. The retail banking segments offer a range of banking support services to individuals and small businesses. The commercial banking segment offers local and medium sized businesses with financial solutions and services. The Corporate & Institutional Banking segment serves large businesses, governments, investors and banks. The Private Banking segment offers clients grow and protect their wealth.
The bank operates in four regions that are ASEAN & South Asia, Europe & Americas, Greater China & North Asia and Africa & Middle East. ASEAN & South Asia is the largest market of the bank with operations in 10 AEAN Countries. In Europe & Americas the bank is centred in London and New York with presence in both continents.
In Greater China & North Asia, the bank services customers in China, Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan; it is the largest region by income. In Africa & Middle East, the bank has presence in 25 markets, of which the most sizeable income comes from Nigeria, UAE, and Kenya. The bank’s client facing businesses are supported by nine global functions that include human resources, legal, technology & innovation, operations, risk, corporate affairs, brands & marketing, group CFO, group internal audit and conduct, financial crime and compliance.
