Cisco Systems also focuses on developing security systems that include next-generation firewalls, advanced malware protection, VPN security, and email and web security products.

Computer scientists and couple Sandra Lerner and Leonard Bosack co-founded the company in 1984 while working for Stanford University and developed a multiprotocol router.

The software company went public in 1990.

Cisco Systems is listed on NASDAQ and trades under the ticker 'CSCO'. It is also among various indexes like NASDAQ-100, Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), S&P 500, and S&P 100 components.

Many products like Internet Protocol (IP) phones and telepresence have been featured in many movies and television series, the company claims.

The company claims to have utilized nearly 85 per cent of electricity generated from renewable energy resources in 2020.
