The bank was founded in 1817 by a group of merchants in a rented location in Montreal. It was formerly known as Montreal Bank.
However, it officially commenced the operations in November 1817 and rebranded to the present name in 1822.
Now headquartered in Toronto, the bank's head office remained in Montreal till 1977.
